Human conflict is the essence of human innovation. Inventions are solutions to problems. Without problems, we can't have solutions. True, droughts and world hunger are problems, but you can't crucify people for being more concerned with their own problems than with other people's - if humans and other animals did not act out of this "selfish" instinct, they all would have died off a long time ago. That's evolution for ya - unless you don't believe in it.

But back to the real issue, I also can't seriously see this technology going anywhere. Hell, we can't even forecast the weather properly, let alone control it. It's all a bunch of stochastic processes that we barely even understand let alone have a firm working model of. It's like superconductor research, always hype but never results. I'm not holding my breath for this one.
