err..never heard of it...cybertrance and I am a yank!

Progressive, when it's labeled by various record stores, basically has a housey feel to trance with clear steps of BPM rising (from 115 to 130 usually)

just my view

Yup, I guess it is just a yank word. To us PvD, Agnelli & Nelson, Binary Finary, Rank 1 are progressive and what is CYBER would be Minimalistix, Q-stix, Energy 52, Westbam, Gouryella, PPK. Have you guys heard of Mars and Mystre outside of California/the country? If you havent i'll post a whole bunch of songs that I totally would recommend downloading!

Tu_Face, I was in NY last month and I went to Beyond Bass, you know, Johnny Vicious's store, and I saw a Cybertrance section. I also went to Satellite Records and saw a section there too. Anyone whose ever in NYC check out Beyond Bass, 60E 3rd Street Ny, Ny 10003!

Well a Uplifting Genre of trance i consider it as Epic Trance..not CyberTrance... Satellite genres are wrong anyway....you go there they name everything thats epic and melodic Progressive..they mix house and trance together...and some are techno!! you cant go by that...but they dont have a cybertrance genre there hmmm..... I always called Melodic and Uplifting Trance...EPIC TRANCE many people i know called that way as well!

progressive

progressive anything = music that is progressing and pushing a genre forward. its as simple as that. it usually involves the blending of different styles of music. it changes over time like hybrid was progressive by taking elements of trance and breaks. i don't really see them as progressive anymore because that is now a standard. sasha and john digweed are progressive because they are always pushing the limits of what is coming out, always forward thinking. so basically you can't label progressive as a specific style of music 'cause it ain't

oh and cyber trance is a "genre" of trance that mars and mystre of san francisco made up. i don't know who they think they are changing the name of established styles of trance but that is where "cyber" trance came from. i can't start calling house music whatever i want so i don't know why they started this cyber crap. plus it sucks

I agree that their way of styling what they play as cybertrance is a little self-serving. However there is no denying Mars & Mystre are pioneers of the SF trance scene. Sorry but I have to defend them. I think this is best done by posting part of an interview with Thomas Trouble another DJ who has also been pretty influential to the SF bay area scene.

"I think Mars deserves much credit for taking the
gamble and opening F8 and exposing more people to the
genre, if fact this was the pebble in the pond that
was to cause more than just a mere ripple."
In 1997 Thomas opened the Trance and Jungle Factory
(now Skills) to further the SF trance scene but it
wasn't until about 98 or early 99 that the dance scene
exploded in general and the trance scene in
particular, and not only in San Francisco but
worldwide."

"Previous to this there was resistance from promoters to
book trance (house & breaks being the order of the
day) but with F8 doing their events followed by
Thoma's own events along with a handful of other small
trance oriented parties it wasn't long before numbers
began to swell. It wasn't long before previously
reluctant promoters began clambering to get a bit of
the trance action and a number of DJs from an array of
genres also formerly resistant to the trance scene
decided to hop on the bandwagon for the ride.
These events had the effect ,nevertheless, of swelling
a genre that would soon dominate this city's rave
scene. Thomas explains "since the six of us were in
ther before it was popular we now have a strong
standing and pedigree within the best and biggest
scene for trance in the country, in fact I like to
refer to San Francisco as "trance capital of the USA"
for one reason - because it is!"

(excerpts formTrance-State interview).

One more thing, although I like a lot of the songs Mindbender listed, I would not consider them Cybertrance nor progressive.

Talking here we go...

Here are some descriptions of music that we in the uk (i hope) tend to use

Uplifting Trance: Any trance that gives out the 'happy vibe' usually very melodic with big buildups and stuff

Hard Trance: An trance with a mega kickin bassline/drumline, also has very big riffs, sometimes even acid riffs

Progressive Trance: Pure adrenaline in a tune, very often has the same things popping up over and over (repetetive). usually builds up from a bare beat into a big climaz, although not the kind of climax you get in uplifting stuff. If u want to know what i mean here listen to x-press 2 - 'ac/dc'

Melodic Trance: Very much the same as uplifting trance but it has more melodic riffs and hooks. i.e. minimalistix - 'struggle for pleasure'

Deep/Dream Trance: Often very light trance, has strong links with progressive in that it can be repetative (but NOT boring!!), usually the kind of stuff sasha makes. a good example is sasha - 'xpander'

ive gone on enough now! ill shut up...

peace
