Techno is a music in its own right, some people say that trance is a branch off of techno, also people who think techno is trance that doe's get annoying and I'm with the dude who said that there cos i've been asked that on many occasions, but to the the ****** who says techno dosen't exist needs to be shot, i'd love to see people who say that say it to techno fans faces cos it exists Djs like Carl Cox, darren emerson, Sven Vath, jeff mills, and mr C have been spiinin it since the late 80s, plus techno even has its sub genres like Gabba and so on, but lets not mention genres they don't mix well on these forums. fair enough the difference bwteen genres exist and some are arder to distinguish then others but saying a genre dosen't exist isn't on.

This Souvenir de Chine track is junk (IMO).... i can't understand why everyone is raving about it on here... i see like 3 threads going about it at the same time. It doesn't really do anything for me anyways.... Tiesto's "Urban Train" kicks that song's a$$ IMO.

Urban Train's kicked ass since it was on Scott Bond's Essential Mix.

The track is freakin' sweet.

ABT, I wanted to say EXACTLY the same thing. I agree with you completely! This new song is pretty bad and un-memorable IMO.

Techno is my favorite genre, and i can listen to Picotto for HOURS!! i dont know, maybe its the hard beats, but you are right about mixing - its easy NOT because of the same beats (although that is easy too)... but b/c in regular trance you have buildups and refrains and basically parts of songs with no beats (and intros with no beats sometimes)... so that kinda makes it harder to spin uplifting i feel.... granted i can do it, (who can't?), but it is easier to spin techno....

Techno just moves my body crazy... i can't stand still at a Picotto show!

hey well how come no one mentioned the kind of techno that daft punk, chemical brothers, and prodigy are?
..... we're just thinking of that crazy beating melody-less stuff....
what kind of techno is the picotto techno, im wondering.. does it all have subgenres like trance (im guessing yah)

uh anyways i like souvenir de chine, but its no classic. its NOT a bad song tho, that surprises me. id say its about as good as push - till we meet again

typical fire & ice stuff, maybe a notch above silent cry

Patticus, you watch me like a HAWK, my friend

The kind of techno that Picotto, Vath, Jeff Mills, etc. spin is called (by them, mind you) "progressive techno", (not progressive house, patticus, don't worry!) whilst stuff you named is called just plain "techno"........ but since we never really ever discuss daft punk, prodigy, underworld, etc, i just have been lazy and refering to it as techno.....my mistake. And yes, there are sub-genres of progressive techno, but i'll be damned if i can name them...

Wanna slap my wrists with a ruler?

Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers and Prodigy ARE NOT REAL TECHNO (I mean as in the GENRE).

Daft Punk is House music. Chemical Brothers is Big Beat or Breakbeats, and from what I've heard Prodigy is mostly Breakbeats as well. The genre (style) that is REAL Techno is always 4/4 steady beat (ie. not broken beats) and VERY repetitive (crazy melody-less stuff, as you say).

Picotto and others is REAL Techno (as in the genre). There are plenty of sub-genres of Techno including Detroit Techno, Swedish Techno, Minimal Techno, Acid Techno, etc. but it's all like what Picotto and others spin, NOT Daft Punk, Chem Bros or Prodigy. When people call that "Techno" they are just referring the entire spectrum of Electronic Music, not the actual genre/style called Techno.

First post for months!

Well I haven't been here for a while (the forums I mean) Truth is I kinda got bored! My music taste has gone a lot more psy/goa (and classical ) but I still love epic, progressive, uplifting etc trance. I also love techno. I feel it is a lot less corrupt compared with trance. We have had endless discussions on commercialisation of trance is the past and I don't wanna start another, and maybe I'm wrong, but in the "techno" genre there is a lot less commercial interest. I guess you could say that it is still a more pure art form

We have also had a lot of genre based discussion. This is always good for people new to the scene and can really clarify the type of music that others enjoy. Although genres can restrict peoples exposure to good music, so long as they open their minds to other genres once in a while, I don't have a problem with them.

A quote from Felix Da Houscat in Jockey Slut:
quote:
The truth is, techno came from Little Louis' sets in Chicago. Juan Atkins and Derrick May used to drive to Chicago and listen to Little Louis when he was doing weird electronic bleeps and stuff like War Games. They got the ideas, drove back and said, "We're going to call this techno". Derrick get mad every time I tell him this but he knows it's true.

Personally, I have abandoned genres. I call it all DOOF. There is good doof and bad doof. If it ain't doof - then it doesn't matter anyways!
