And if that were true, which I very much doubt it is, why would they have joined the security forces in the first place and not took up arms against the coalition in the first place?

No, they are switching sides cos of American heavy handedness towards their fellow countrymen (ie their friends and families)

I'm SURE others here can give you better answers but i think that,

1. the fundementalists were very weak under Saddam's rule, when they did problems he used massive army force and bombed Sheein Cities.
2. at first the citizens of iraq actually were happy that Saddams rule came to end, and it was like "popular" thing to join the iraqi security forces. They dropped out because they were afraid of loosing their lifes by fanatics or because they were also affected by the illogical & radical idiologies that spread across Iraq.

you really think this is true? do you not think the opposite is true, as i blieve, that American heavy handedness is a reaction to iraqi countrymen switching sides? it would seem a more logical conclusion wouldnt it? you think the americans use heavy handed force just for fun?

Odd, the Iraqis didn't seem to care much when their fellow (extremist) countrymen used 'heavy handedness' to kill their friends, families, and most notably themselves.

Now the Iraqis are all of a sudden concerned that they will have to kill their fellow countrymen??? Well, their countrymen have been killing Iraqis since last year, and they seemt to have cared about that
