Metal detectors are not the worst thing to come. Ever heard of "clear lockers" idea? Some guy designed a "prototype" of a locker that has a clear door and angled mirror on top to see what is behind folders. The idea is in middle of approvement and some schools already implemented it.

So much for privacy...

I know this was meant in a humourous context, but I get the tone in this thread that some people here have trouble digging on the concept of debate.

Debate is *not* about necessarily agreeing with what you're saying (yes, this is the problem with the adversarial criminal justice system, but that's a long side topic) it's simply about seeing the other view, and being able to argue it effectively.

Personally, I think that kind of 'two way' thinking should be mandatory for HS students. I'm not a hard line relativist, but being able to see both (or many) sides on a given issue is always a useful skill, both socially and intellectually.

Where I went to school, they had metal detectors and if you didn't set it off, they handed you a gun and made you walk through it again.

You guys are behind the times.

Personally I don't see what a big problem is with having metal detectors in schools which are susceptable to violent students. Of course, it doesn't make sense to make metal detectors in nice and quiet neighbourgoods, but it's better to cause many people minor inconveniences than to have a few people loose their lives. Besides, those things can be set up to respond to a varying degree of incoming signal, so that they don't get set off at an earring or a cell phone. The only problem might be if a person is for some reason carrying around some 2kg of iron, but I think that happens only on rare occasions.

i agree that it would be something that i could easily accept if there was any reason for it. but guards ffs! then there is something REALLY wrong with the society (although *something* seems wrong if you need metal detectors too...)
