well then can someone make a TA guide for the uninformed such as myself. people always ask me what i spin and i usually say good music. and then they say no seriously. and i give them the generic answer of trance with some house and progressive. and then they say no seriously. and then i smile and walk away. it would be helpful for me if someone in the TA boards would take a shot at breakin it down but then maybe no one is trying cuz no one really knows. all i know is that i'm down with dj martijn's style although i have been getting into tribal lately.

Here is the way I see it:
There are really only a few main types of trance. Most of the examples you gave are just generic subgenres and were just made up by someone to describe a certain song.
"Vocal trance". What is it? Pretty self explanitory.. a trance song with words. If a dj plays "vocal trance" he simple likes to play songs with words.
I think the main question here is the difference between progressive and uplifting/euro/epic/club (basically all the same thing) trance. Euro-trance has two common elements.. build up and a climax and then usually a denoument (sp?). It may have either one or two climaxes but never 3. This is why it is uplifting - it builds and builds and then explodes. Progressive, on the other hand, has no traditional build up to a climax. It is much more like techno. It usually has the same types of simple samples and complex rhythms and beats. While euro-trance has simple beats and more of a concentration on melody. It could easily be confused with techno. However it is more progressive than techno. It starts off simple and then adds with more samples as time moves on. Which is why it is called progressive.

"PSYcadelic trance" or "goa" (usually grouped together but they are different) are a totally different sound from most trance. It is much faster and the baseline is much heavier. It is more warped, twisted and enchanting and it plays with your head.

I don't know much about house so I won't try and explain that.

Hope this helps

I think that Trance gets broken up into many different subgenres because there is so much variety in Trance music. I mean, if you listen to most other genres, the music is fairly similar (in prevalence of instruments, beat, etc). But in trance, since so many different sounds can be created electronically, the music tends to vary as much as Metal and Country do.

So...I think it is a good idea to categorize the different types of trance. Especially so that we may eliminate the 'Total Horshit Trance' from tarnishing trance.

This isn't to say that I want DJs to stick to one style. In fact, I prefer to hear a set that samples from a range of different styles.

heres my opinion on the matter...

Uplifting trance - has a mellow steady bass line...nothing to hard. Then high pitched mellow synths kick in, maybe violin or something. Also a womans angelic voice can be found. It breaks down to near silence then builds up with those synths and no bass. Bass drops back in. Try anything Gouryella...PVD...Rank 1. kamaya painters

Progressive Trance - Same steady synths as above. But this time a bit more of a hard pounding bass line to it. A bit faster than uplifting/emo. Probably around 140 bpm or so. This will also break down to near silence, but never really gets to the point of pure synths hands in the air head back eyes close breathing in the music feel. Try Push is a pretty good example.

Goa/ Psy trance - Obvious

House - None of those synths (more of a filler sound of synths than anything)...a down and dirty sick bassline that carries you all the way through the track. This gets your body pounding...not flowing. Not that much knowledge of example here but try stuff Carl Cox spun

Tek-House - (My fav) Has the same kind of house beat in it. Some nice gritty techno cuts not too much though. A minimalist approach if you will. Drop in some synths an certain moments and only for brief periods of time. These never really stick through the song. In my mind Picotto's productions are tek-house...as with alot of BXR. Virtua Trancer also fits here i think.

Progressive House - NOT TRANCE! This is like Darude. Slamming beats all the way through with a thick as fog, dirty bass line. Bumps at like 142 bpm. There is nothing mellow about this. If there are synths in this (most of the time there are) its hard hitting synths almost to the sound of tech...but not quite.

Garage - This one is easy...imagine you are playing music with stuff you find in your garage. Presto.

Tribal- Self Explainatory.

Now this is what ive picked up from spinning and what people say. When knowlegdeable people like other djs ask what i spin i use the above but when any joe schmoe asks i just say trance. Anyways, the music is what you make it. Christ garage can be uplifting if you want it to be. Hope this helps.

Hmmm yeah....but i woulndt call Push progressive....i think puch is kidna hard-uplifting.....and i woulndt call darude Progressive-house...cause shouldnt taht mean that darude is a combination ofprogressive and house? I would say its Uplifting..... a cheesy one...cause it has it all....the melody the harmony...the silence in the middle...and then the break!

But by the definition i used Push being hard uplifting makes it progressive...as for darude it doesnt have the synths only breakdown and when it does its still a hard hitting breakdown...also it moves fast and has too hard of a beat to be uplifting....

This is an example for why trance shouldnt be broken into groups like it is...no one has the same opinions about what somehting should be. Like i said everyone has their own taste and definition. You choose wha it is (I realize that i am being hypocritical by saying that as i just yelled at someone for having their own opinion.)

And i dont know really what you mean with darude....what does everybody else thinks? Is Darude cheesy-uplifting or proggressive house?

Hello

First let me than you all for these explanation ... I only knew about uplifting trance since it's the kind of trance I like the most ... There's still a little thing that may require further explanation for me : epic trance ... I don't think any post explains what it is, or maybe I missed it ?

Thanx
Lapinou
