Also, I find it extremely useful to create a couple simple percussion loops to work with at first (i usually leave bass drum out)...

Then I take those loops, i layer them together, put different filters on them, add some other samples and hats and other percussions to create more and more fuller percussion...

Keep repeating that over and over to get different fuller sounding loops...

Also, I find that following the standard kick hi hat clap hi hat formula is not a good idea for good percs...

Experiment with different genres of percussion... make them at trance BPM and you get some interesting percussion... and layer, filter, rinse, repeat.. etc...

Basically... percussion I find is an often neglected part for a lot of producers...

It is always more interesting to play around with a synth and create melodies than busting your ass and trying to get a decent percussion but failing..

Just take the advice I gave above... keep layering... add more.. layer.. loop.. filter.. etc...

Ok... here is an audio example of what I explained above... Number 1 to Number 6 are various loops that I made or layered with other loops (not too impressive by themselves)...

Now putting them all together forms example 7 (I added a kick)... I filtered each different percussion loop to each give them their own space in the mix... added some stereo seperation... and voila.. you have a full sounding percussion...
