I second that notion! He sounds like an ignorant little bastard to me. What kind of music does HE listen to I wonder...

To take music and play it like a machine... that's easy. But to take a machine and play it like music... that takes talent.

Re: Help me put a trance-hater straight.

Well, this hater doesn't sound like he/she is worth your time, but if you want to debate it....

"Trance isn't music, it's made with computer,...." -- A lot of trance is made with computers, but not all of it. Safri Duo plays their drums, and some producers play the keyboards. Not to mention some trance has vocals. You get the idea.
"...computers can't make music" -- I really don't know who made him/her the authority on this because last time I checked, almost anything could make music. Are glasses filled with water suppose to make music (rubbing or tapping)? Is a person beat-boxing not music?

"Trance is such a nerdy genre of music, only fat computer nerds make it or listen to it" -- Huh? I've actually never heard this generalization. If he's calling it "nerdy", then you already know the person is a dumbass. You might as well agree that smart (I'd say intelligent, but that word might be too big for him/her) people listen to trance.

"You don't need to be talented to make trance, everybody can do it, so it's not real music". -- I'll agree with the "everybody can do it" part only because I've seen software sold that advertises you can create your own trance tracks. Just like anyone can buy a guitar and strum away. With the software (and the guitar), you need talent to create music people enjoy listening to.

I agree with just ignoring this person, but if you really want to deal with the frustration....

From the Midwest of the US, I feel your frustration.
They cannot all be simply ignored, (doing so would make you a social outcast).

Sadly enough, I don't know if I have a solution for you, the kid won't listen to anything you say anyway. So what I would suggest is to show appreciation for all good forms of music. If he likes guitar, talk Hendrix, Sublime, and Nirvana. If he likes hip-hop, talk Dre and Biggy. If he likes classical, talk Mozart, because nothing makes you look more ignorant than saying any entire genre of music is "non-musical" or purely worthless. For every genre of music, there can be found someone who devotes their life to the musical aspects of it, and this cannot be ignored.

As for the "fat kids making music with their computers," I don't know anything quite as cool as blasting hyper-cheese "techno" at night from your car... this in itself has a certain aura that is accepted even in the midwest.

Re: Help me put a trance-hater straight.

"Trance isn't music, it's made with computer, computers can't make music" - Technology these days is pretty good, if you can play really realistic games and run accounts for businesses using computers then why can't you make music with them. It's still made up of keys, chord progressions, rhythms and scales, so why's it not music?

"Trance is such a nerdy genre of music, only fat computer nerds make it or listen to it" Nah, I'd always seen trance as more of a genre for fun people to go out and dance to, and music that can affect people emotionally and make them happy. So what's nerdy about that?

"You don't need to be talented to make trance, everybody can do it, so it's not real music". I'd just that guy to go get himself a copy of FL or Reason and knock out a great trance tune that will be played by the top DJs, then he'll see how easy it is.

Not that this is so hard to counter, but what would you say?

Just ignore him. He is a moron. Let him listen to whatever bullshit he likes to listen.

"Are u listening to your robot music?? TEE-HEE!"
"Is that your TRANCE music?"
"Why are people standing in one place flailing their arms?"
"It all sounds the same."
"People actually listen to this?"
"Why is there so much of this crap?" //dc++
