me and my friends used to go tunneling. we live near folsom damn in california. those run off tunnles would literally run for miles. some you can stand up and walk in, some you haev you crawl. we would pack backpacks with food/drink etc, and use torches for light. by torches i mean sticks on fire, not english flashlights
i remember one time we were probably about a mile or so in, and we smelled what seems propane or some other gas. we noticed that the torchest got bigger in flame volume, so we dipped them out in the water, and crawled back in complete darkness.
fun times

on that sleepy city site, i keep hearing about the "sydney clan" anyone know who or what that is. a crew? a gang? another bunch of explorers?
seeing as it's an Australian site, I am assuming that they are a group hailing from Sydney in Australia. Try asking in the Australian forum cos there are a lot of Sydney siders there who might know more about them.
btw amazing sites & photography on the sleepy city site

Hey glad you like Sleepy City and the photos, its something a bit different and (hopefully) opens peoples eyes to the things around them they've never noticed. Urban exploration is really growing, its good to hear a few other peoples stories of stuff they've done. That library someone mentioned is interesting.
