maybe i am a bit of an idealist, but i think that acquiring a certain countries citizenship should be done only if one REALLY believes that said country would be his/ her home country.
The point I am trying to make is that I believe it to be really hard to say that "if the USA is going to attack my country of birth, I will go fight for the USA, not the other country."
Therefore, I can completely understand that your 'before' wanted to keep his citizenship, even though he has had a green card for a long time.
