Exactly it is wrong...because there are more important things in life than studying and being perfect in school...parents like that really bother me

and i thought my parents where pushy!

i'm spoiled in that case... looking at scenarios like that makes me appreciate the logic my parents have. They tend to be a bit pushy but not to that extreme.

thanks mom, thanks dad.

It's so ironic.. i never finished high school, yet i make more than everyone i know who has. And when they graduate from university, i'll still be making more. Taking the path less travelled > following the crowds. You'd think that of all people, Asians would know this best - look how many Hong Kong business millionaires there are!

Ecxept that it seems that a lot of these asian ppl don't...i mean i don't know what it is...i think it might be part of the whole "communist" crap - i remember things like back in the USSR...but it's crazy really.

a broad education is extremely important ... making money is not the be all, end all!

it's up to you what you want in life, and sure, you should be able to decide what is right for YOU, but the parents and teachers should be there to guide and mentor you from an early age, - not coerce you!

*EDIT*
My mom always told me that that's exactly how her parents were with her and she was right (i was being influenced by my grandparents as well). But the difference is that my mom didn't let them influence me after a while and she gave me full autonomy to do what i felt was right...I definitely feel sorry for my mom for the fact she had to go through that but I love the fact that she is the coolest mom in the world when it comes to me. I will definitely raise my child following her example

Its one thing to force your child to study and do nothing else, and it another thing to encourage them with almost all thier effort to value the attainment of knowledge through studious behaviour. Fromt he Asians i have encountered, many of them are just brought up that way, to perfect their knowledge and education, something they pride much more than playing sports, going to the movies, getting drunk and doing drugs (althought that isnt the case for Guvernment )

I totally agree - there's nothing wrong wtih having education and knowledge - overall it makes for a better society - but the problem is that they have no emotional development...sports IMO are very important - they develop character discipline and a lot of other skills...the problem is that a lot of people are forcing this insane pressure on their kids and that's not right. After all kids should be kids...and like i said there are much more important things in life than doing amazing in school...I can pull out a list of people who didn't do that well in school but did amazing in life and vice versa. I set my own high goals for school - but that's just me it's not like someone is pushing me to it...there's one thing to guide but it's a whole other thing to force someone.

Oh so true...

Success is a journey of many failures, not a destination.
If you fail, you learn from those failures and MOVE ON.
The school system is atrocious for this because it certainly is not like that in the real world at all.
Someone else's opinion of you does not have to become your reality; especially the school system's.
They are NOT the be all and end all of what's happening in the real world.
It's about your own perseverance whether you fail or not as long as you get up more times than you fall.
I know this may sound like a bunch of cliches but I can't stress how true this is.
The sooner students like that poor girl learn this REAL lesson, the better off they will be...

since non of u are gonna stumble over this, i might as well say it...

the parents are not neccessarily pushy but competition in any part of asia is extremely great due to the lack of jobs. its not only to be a millionaire (which as u might not know arent that many in India)

In the 10th and 12th grade, the exam is education-board wide. many states will follow one education board adn then anotehr bunch will follow the rest.

the teacher that teaches the subject to the student isnt he one correcting but the exam papers are sent to randome teachers unde the same board.

in 10th grade i barely made teh distinciton class (65%) and i was happy. many are

if u fail even one exam, it means u repeat the whole year as compared to here where u just retake the failed subject in summerschool or watever.

to repeat the whole year means u will be in a classroom of people a year younger than you, u will be looked down upon by ur former clasmates and ridiculed and so on.

India is not a geek nation as percieved by N. America due to the job exports goin on right now.

oh and back to the first point i made, the competition is so great that unlike how we faced teh "double cohort" bug last year, where we were afraid that alot of students wouldnt be able to get into university due to the overpopulation, thats something that happens every year in india. the ratio of students to available seats is about 5:1
