It also may not be charged on everything, depending on the state. Some states don't charge sales tax for food or school supplies. And in all states, you avoid sales tax by purchasing things from other states over the internet - there is no cross-border collection. If I am in Wisconsin, and buy a hard drive from California through a place like Newegg.com, I don't pay any tax on the transaction.

Note that with the US tax rates, it is extremely rare for people to pay the full amount on their income, as there are numerous ways to get deductions. (That's why we have a huge federal tax code). For example, if you own a home and have a mortgage, the interest is deductible from your income. My interest on my student loan debt is deductible. Many purchases that people make that can also be used for business are deductible, and so on.

Cool, we also have deductions too. I didnt know that some states didnt have a state tax

That must be why Canadians come to the US for healthcare (and sometimes your government has to foot the bill)...

Actually Canadians end up paying a higher proportion of their salary to the government in taxes than Americans do. It's tough to be exact because it depends on the tax bracket, deductions and examptions, etc etc... So even though their tax rate is lower for some brackets, the US taxpayer ends up paying less at the end of the year.

Besides, if you normalize exchange rates, an entirely different picture emerges from those tax brackets...

Just as americans come to Canada for health care . i.e. Hamilton Health Sciences & childrens hospital which is ranked with the best health care institutions in the world. We are not lacking the quality.

The major flaws in Canadian health care system are the wait times for diagnostic health procedures. Many canadians go to the states to avoid the 3 month wait. Dont kid yourself, should someone need emergency attention, they got it. Also, the medical standards are too high which prevent many eligable doctors and immigrated doctors to practice which is responsible for the shortage of doctors.

Of course the govt will foot the bill. According to the Canadian Health Act, the govt has a responsibility to fullfill the needs of patients, should they fall short, they are held accountable.

To the people who actually read the media from Canada and don't live here, news flash NO ONE IS GOING TO BEAT THE LIBERALS

Paul Martin will be Prime Minister come July

I sincerely doubt that the Conservatives will do that much damage other than take a few liberal seats. The Toronto region has the most seats and usually they are 98% liberal. Till I see evidence of that changing, I don't see the Conservatives doing much. The NDP is weak and will get 10-15 seats (as usual and I bet Layton won't win his own seat , trust me, the guy he is going up against is a longterm MP and I doubt Layton will win). The bloc will take 20 seats but that leaves the liberals to pick that up. So it will come down to another liberal majority because no one likes the party leaders but we rather vote Martin. I'm going to vote Liberal because Paul Martin knew what he was doing as Finance Minister and he was not the puppet that Chretien had and because of him not being the puppet and rather stepping down, I rather have him go after Chretien in the scandals. He at least is trying to bring some accountability to a country who's government has never had that happen.

I think Paul Martin will be prime minister, but i doubt it will be a majority government with a landslide victory like they wanted previously. Recent polls show that the Liberal government is in for a minority government. The polls are somewhere around 38% Liberal, 28% Conservatives, 15% NDP, the other percentage Bloc and other parties.

Dont forget kids, election day is June 28

hey man, those taxation brackets you posted are only at the federal level for both countries.!!!

You aren't taking into account provincial income taxes and state-level income taxes!

Canadian income taxes are generally higher than the US's.

I know i know. Every province is different, you expect me to look up each one? Alberta's flat rate at 10% provincial income tax, it generally benefits people with higher incomes than lower incomes.

But after deductions the overall income taxes paid are a bit less.
