As much as I go to south beach to party, I wouldn’t really recommend it as being a great place to live and study. Miami is one of those cities that is SOOO big, and there are only a few nicer, upscale areas. It’s pretty ghetto, and even a little "ghetto-fab" in south beach at times. And Miami schools are ghetto too.
FAU is not so bad. The Boca Raton campus is beautiful, but it’s full of rich, snobby kids (and I don’t doubt druggies either). There’s a Ft. Lauderdale campus too next to BCC (community college). Nova is a nice school, but I’m not aware of all the politics involved. My girlfriend is starting grad school there soon, and pretty much every attorney in south florida went to law school there. It’s very reputable.
I would recommend going further north like in the Palm Beach area and try FAU. It’s just nicer, and better up there. I have lived in south Florida pretty much my whole life with the exception of a couple years in high school when I got to leave the country (thank god). I have just watched south Florida deteriorate throughout the past couple of years and it’s a damn shame. I’m so sick of it here and I don’t plan on raising a family or living here for that much longer.
Coming from NY, it’s probably different though. It’s like someone moving there and getting all excited and you telling them how sick of it you are.
My 2 cents
