It's not even religion. The top Saudi clerics openly stated that those who murdered innocent hostages such as Johnson would NOT get into heaven. This has absolutely nothing to do with religion or Iraq or Bush. THe goal of Al-Qaeda is quite clear. If they drive out all foreigners from Saudi Arabia the monarchy will crumble. The monarchy NEEDS foreign workers and they need foreign investment. Without them, their position destabilizes which creates a power vacuum that Al-Qaeda can fill. Therefore, they don't give two shits whether religious clerics condemn the murder. I would go so far to say that they didn't want the Saudis to cooperate and release prisoners. |
I certainly realize the deeper parameters of such actions Occ, of course it is not religion exclusively. Where the problem begins however is in a Saudi society that teaches that non-Muslims and those deemed to be infidels are essentially not entitled to any rights, can you imagine if we started picking off Muslims here in America one by one with a shotgun blast, it would not happen, but the reality is that Saudi society and the religous teachings make people believe within Saudi Arabia that it is while not admittedly acceptable, there is an indifference and even well it doesn't affect me attitude about the murdering of foreigners. Poverty, lack of freedoms, corruption, all are factors that affect Saudi society today. Religion however so intertwined into that society gives a justification to look outward at others and even kill them because they are different and it is taught that it is okay to look down on them.
