The brand name isn't really that important for a pc. Just make sure that you get a good processor (either P4 or Athlon XP... correct me if I'm wrong there) and enough ram. About a gig of ram is pretty standard now. Don't get one of those small desktop computers like dell and gateway make because they aren't upgradeable... found this out the hard way.

And it actually isn't that hard.. You really can't put any parts wrong way (if you're building it yourself, not just ordering the parts). and when ordering ask from the store you're buying from if you're missing any parts. They'll tell you.

that is the biggest load of bullshit ive EVER heard. (regarding to that G4 vs. top of the line PC). Thats completely outdated, and if they ran a G5 with dual 2.5 gig processors it would run LOOPS around a PC.

My production partner uses a G5 with dual 2.0 gigahertz processors and can rewire reason into protools...running about 30ish instruments in reason, about 10ish effects processors, all eqed in protools etc. Computer doesnt even THINK about breaking a sweat.

Hands fucking down, get a G5.

You can't really compare G5 to P4 or AMD's 32bit cpus.. Since G5 is the 64bit you need to compare it with opteron or Athlon 64. I'm pretty sure those are worthy opponent to G5.

Before even asking which kind of Mac to get, make absolutely positively sure that the programs you're gonna get will work for it. Don't think that you can just get the fastest comp with a huge load of ram and be done with it. Some people will waste money doing something like this (like buying a brand new car, with the wrong keys, and no way to get the right ones). You should buy the software first, find out what systems support it, then look for a comp. Macs are great for editing, but the really, really powerful ones cost too much. You should build a powerful custom PC (w/warranty of course) and get one of the more popular sequencers out now, like CUBASE or SONAR or even FL Studio.

mac is better? maybe it will when they port all apps to osx, but until then it is not, there is still too much problems with osx.
and the thing about viruses - you really access internet via your audio workstation? then it is not a serious audio workstation. that is definitely not a valid criteria for estimation of an audio workstation quality. stability is also fine if you don't use weird drivers, weird hardware and warez.

In my school i use g4's and it crashes all the time. Using Logic, i forget what version but i find it completely unstable. Gayest thing about macs' is there is no eject button for anything lol.
Go Pc, fast cpu, tons of ram few HD's and ur set. I prefer Cubase
