Picture the scene, It's 2002, Everton v Arsenal.
Arsenal are unbeaten in over a year, it's 1-1 with only a minute to go...
Then this happens...

You think he has been impressive so far in Euro 2004 Aged only 18?

He was only 16 when he scored this goal

If Rooney maintains this goal scoring pace and can come through in the bigger games, he will certainly go down as one of England's best players. But he has to keep it going through his 20s.

But let's be honest...if he's great for England but they never win anything, he'll be another Gary Linker or Alan Shearer. Rooney must play on a Euro or World Cup winning team to go down as one of the best ever. Anyway, he's only 18. We can have this discussion again in 10 years. I'm just glad he's English and wasn't wasted on Scotland or Wales (Ryan Giggs anyone?)

Can you imagine the team if they had Ryan Giggs in the side! Adds a whole new dimension, and wasnt his father English but his mom persuaded him to play for Wales? bleh...

I think that was Hargreaves...born in Canada to an English father and Welsh mother. Hard choice between those three nations eh? I think Giggs could have played for England but they didn't think he was good enough at the time and then became a star after already playing for Wales. A pity.

Unless he gets bought by a bigger club, he won't win silverware with Everton.

Good luck bringing him to Anfield...he is, and always has been, an Evertonian. I think he will stick it out there for a few more seasons but eventually the money will probably get to him. Everton is such a great club with probably the best history in England. I hope Rooney can help build a new Everton.

put him up against a good team, like France or Portugal, and he's nowhere. he will never be Pele 2, since he doesn't have finesse.
the finesse Zidane, Figo, Davids, Pele, Van Nistelrooij, Van Basten, Gulit, Maradonna, Cruijff, Eusebio, etc has.
he just walks fast and struggles a lot, that's why he can score a few times.

Rooney made his first ever England start against Turkey, and was absolutely amazing. He tore them apart, took em on, played with them, beat them, tackled them, he was simply MOM.

Your wrong straight away, because England played against France in opening game. Everytime he got on the ball he scared shit out of French players, and he beat them with ease. All the players mentioned there are either at the end of their career (coming up to it within 5 years) or they are retired. Rooney is 18.

I dont agree he is already Pele, and it is hard to imagine anyone as good as Pele to ever grace a football field as well.

Pele won the world cup, but i think Brazil had such a quality team (best team in history) that without him, i think they still would have won. Argentina, without Maradonna would never have won the world cup because he single handedly won it for them.

i think Rooney has now 9 goals in 11 games, that is an excellend goal record for an internation!

Rooney is different from Shearer and Liniker. They were both great goalscorers, Rooney is something else, he mixes pace, power, strength, mental awareness and he has such a good shot on him, never mind being able to header the ball too. Very rarely do you get all these in one.

p.s. Hargreeves could also have played for Germany because he had been a resident there since a young lad or something.

i think he was better agianst france than the other 2 matches even he didn't score...

and if anyone is going to be as good as pele...who knows, why not rooney
