Sucks that the poor Korean guy got killed, it's pretty confronting to see him on the news screaming for his life last night, and then waking up this morning to find he's had his head chopped off.

But what sickens me even more is the way that people (particularly that sick excuse for a human being Alexander Downer) use brutal events like this to justify torturing Iraqi prisoners or "collateral damage" (innocent civilians being blown up by "smart" bombs). These people need reminding that two wrongs don't make a right. Nor does one wrong justify another wrong.

In the words of Faithless, "whether long range weapon, or suicide bomber, a wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction".

The simple fact is that people have died needlessly, and will continue to die needlessly, and we're complicit in all of it

As for the flagpoles in schools, that's really a whole other thread...

Firstly on the fairly trivial topic compared to the beheadings, Yes I think its good that schools should have the flag flying. After all they are funded by the Government of Australia.
But I think it's good for kids to learn to have pride in their county. By pride I don't mean American 'cry when you hear the anthem' pride, but just to feel proud and lucky to live in the best country. I think today so many people forget they do live in the best country, and I can't help but feel ths is encouraged by the History sylabii in schools. Nothing positive about Australia has been taught to me in History since year 5. Since then it's all been about how the colinists were racist wankers, that went around killing aboriginals, and how all white males should feel bad for everything bad that's ever happened in Australia's history.
Yes partly this is kindof correct, but how is anyone suppoed to have pride, when all they are told is how Aussie's were bastards. It's a quite biased view, and to tell the truth, it's now one of the reasons I hate anything to do with aboriginal history (its fkn boring too), and why now I don't really give a stuff when people talk about aboriginal issues.
Long Rant, way off topic, sorry

Anyway on the topic of terrorists and beheadings. Firstly don't think this is anything new. Believe it or not it still happened when westerners weren't in Iraq! Just that now because there are westerners, we hear about it. Yes I do think it is fkn wrong, but being realistic about it, what else would you expect. The middle east is exactly the same as 3000 years ago, and the ancient Assyrians, who would skin and behead their enemies, as well as burn down their entire cities to the ground. Nothing has changed, and nothing will change unlike what Bush thinks.
And what is it to westerners, kinda like the crusades, a mission to the middle east to kill muslems. Except this time we are not there to get the holy land back, rather to "expell terror".

No I dont think it gives reason for torture or collateral damage as you said webby at all, I just agree with Lethal when he says that you can't just bail for one or two people. Think about all the people killed that you havent seen or heard about . . did you really care about them? It's only because the media is constructing truth and picking what they want to show you, so you will respond in a certain way. Any of you that saw the old show Frontline will know exactly what I mean.

Anyway, as bad as it is, and I hate it also, don't be too surprised with either sides repsonses. It's all happened before, and sorry to all the idealists, but theres not much you can do really, to change things that have been happening for thousands of years. Just appreciate the fact that you live in a very lucky country.

Bring on the flames ******s!
(Please lets hold off on the idealism)

Yeah its true that you can't just bail, but honestly what did that region have anything to do with Bush's initial plan of invasion. He assumed that they were linked to Al-Queda but numerous investigations proved this to be false.

The Bush administration invaded this country for one purpose and one purpose only, oil. There were no weapons of mass destruction, nor evidence that proves they had anything to do with 9/11. These terrorists want the troops out because they shouldn't be in there in the first place. Building a new regime is it? A regime that follows the 'American' way.

Fair enough if they had nukes, or if they were responsible for 9/11... then I would agree that killing off foreigners shouldnt deter the troops invading. But the troops are there for the wrong reasons.

Everyone knows that the reason the war in iraq took place was about oil... noones disputing that fact Rez, but i do belive that if the coalition pull out iraq the world will go down the tube in a big way!! I honestly dont care what regime takes over so long as it isnt religious (my view - religion is the cause of the worlds major attrocities, if you dont agree thats your right but dont try and change my view!).... Hell i wouldnt mind seeing a communist regime take over i belive that would possibly do good for iraq but i digress.... The fact of the matter is if america bails - iraq will go down the tubes and the whole world will suffer...

On the flip side i do agree with pulling OUR troops out of iraq at the end of the year - our troops that are in iraq are SAS troops, medical support troops and air traffic control troops. Now that responsibility for Baghdad airport is back in the hands of the iraqi's (with iraqi traffic controllers running all but the military portion of the base now!) what need is there for our boys to stay? As for the SAS if major combat missions have ended (as claimed repeatedly by America) then you dont need Special forces troops you require your basic grunt soldier (ie your basic infantryman), not the specialised troops, therefore i dont really see the reason for our boys to stay. And as for the medical support troops my understanding is that theyve pretty much been taken over by americans anyway so same deal...

Just my points of view...
