Awesome post by Dj Flesch. In my limited club experience, all of the above that he posted is spot on.

And im not sure.. am i qualified to go up on stage?
What else must be done.. What else must i really mastered.. and also can u guys share.. what/how is the 1st time u go on stage.. I mean do u guys really mastered everything/ is it allright to have some messy beat when transacting for the 1st time u go up on stage?

May we share?

your not ready until you can go and have a blast on your decks.. not plan a set out, have a good 2 hours play, and mixxed it solidly without any troubles or nervousness about your mix at hand. i dont mean pulling every mix off amazingly, cos not all DJs mix amazingly at all times. but also what copmes with DJing other than beatmatching, is knowledge of tracks, how tracks work.

so lets say your up on stage youve got your set completely planned out beforehand.. and the crowds not respinding the way youd like them to. you need to notch it up, you know exactly what you want to play to get them rocking again... but your a bit worried about hiow the transition will sound from your current track, cos you didnt anticipate the crowd not reacting... what do you do? this is where it is quite easy to mess up imo.
so my advice is, just go on your decks, and dig any old record up, sumthing that might not be the best suited from the one your mixing out of... and make it work, and see how you go with that, cos no doubt youll have to do this sumtime in a club

You are ready then, when you feel that you are ready.

I was practising on my decks and i was spinning like pro. Every mix was good and then i know that i was ready to spin infront of the ppl.
Usualy I'm very shy person, but behind the decks I wasn't so nervous and i was able to look at the ppl.

On my 1st gig one of the deck wasn't very good. Pitch was not accurate. I move pitch down and record slow downs!!
It was very hard to mix. Place was halfempty, so it was good experiense for my first gig.

On my 2nd gig all was so good. Mixing was easy with monitors inside DJ booth. But last 3 tracks in my set I wasn't able to mix well. Some ppl were insede booth. They were talking to me and next DJ was cheking the mixer. At the end of my gig I got another gig and another promoter wanted to hear my demo cd. (still trying to do demo cd)

I'm ready to spin live, but I'm not DJ that makes flawless mixes.
Click here You can check my mix and you will notice that im not perfect.

The party I played at last night was a perfect example of this. It was an outdoor party that had rented equipment, and one of the Techs had a blown pitch control.

Basically the entire range of pitch adjustment took place from about +6 to +8 on the slider, and the rest of the pitch slider did nothing. Interesting times.

The key to picking which tracks will sound good for a warmup set is the amount of "stuff" going on in the track. The less the better for warmups. This doesn't mean that you can't play good tracks, it just means that you should respect the timeslot, the club owner and the dancers, and most importantly, the other djs, by doing your job as a Dj. This is a great time to go through those remixes that aren't the best on the record, but are still good. You may find that you are playing tracks that are great for warmups--and the perk is that the crowd probably hasn't heard that mix!

Amen to that! Respect the time slot... very true and I wish more DJs would.

With regards to you wondering if you are ready to play out, I would say it's all to do with how confident you are about it. Let's face it, unless you are real lucky your first gig isn't going to be Gods kitchen anyways so it may not matter too much.

I say that you should definately have confidence in your ability but you can get to a point where you just play in your bedroom and become so anal about your skills that you never think you are ready.
There is a fine line between the two.

It's also worth getting at least some experience playing out because it boosts the learning curve considerably.

Some good advice in this thread.

Cheers
Nem

This is quite true. I suppose it depends on your reasons for buying decks (I've actually talked to a couple of bedroom DJs that don't want to play out live), but I think it's important to get out, take chances, and push yourself (not to mention pimping yourself as much as you possibly can to anyone and everyone).
