its reflection not refraction(my bad), because the light isnt getting bent, its the particals in the air that reflect the light...
so if you shine a lazer pen through dust/dirt/light/smoke, it "lights" the particals up making the path.

right. my original point though was that smoke is better because it's a more constant medium was opposed to rain because it's a dense cloud. rain is irregularly droplets...well, does the consistency of the medium make a differnece?

You know when they do that effect with the lazer and the smoke looking like clouds above you? Well is it possible to make some type of effect with those clouds and make it look like the lazer clouds would be dropping the rain fall?
