I know that playing with a poorly conditioned needle can damage the record.. so, how much do needles/cartridges cost?

They vary, if you want to not spend much and get some good carts still, I would say get the Shure SC25C, my buddy has them, he only payed I think 50 bux CDN for them, and they are really good, if you want slightly higher, then there are the M44G, I dunno how much they are, but I don't think there to bad, then theres the Whitelabels, which are 110CDN, or get some Concordes like me at about 150CDN a pop....it all depends on what you want though, but I would say if you want some good needles that will do you fine, then the SC25C will be plenty good.

Oh yea, you will get addicted to buying vinyl, its more adictive than crack....well atleast it seems I spend more than the average crackhead.

I'm going to be getting a "stanton AOL 30" (not too sure) cartridge and needle around 30-40 bucks.

For the older technics deck that I'm recieving, they don't supply the original needle.. so I'm going to make do with this one.. What do you think?

nope the deck doesn't have too much to do with quality. it just spins around in circles. the most important thing when it comes to quality (aside from your stereo and so forth) is the needle.
I haven't heard of Stanton's "AOL 30". and if its coming with the tables its prolly quite worn which will make it sound worse and wear down the vinyl even more.
i would definatly invest in a new cartridge. Ortofon is great and so is Shure.
