Actually I'm just taking a high school graphic design course as an elective... but it's advanced graphic design (they told me to skip the basic one because it would be too easy for me.) Should be fun.

I use 360 by 360 dpi (which is the resolution of my printer) for images in photoshop. I've never had a problem printing graphics, text, etc. Always comes out nice and clean and crisp. I'm guessing that with Illustrator, the computer just converts your image to a bitmap image before it sends it to the printer anyway, but there shouldn't be too much of a difference in quality. The fidelity lost when applying certain filters to a bitmap image is the only concern I can think of... ex: if you start with a 360x360 dpi image and apply glass or ripples or other distortion to it, parts of it can get blocky if they get zoomed in too much. Most of the more common effects that I use (blur, lighting, glows and such) make up for the lost fidelity of the bitmap image with the averaging used by the algorithm in the effect. Blurring or putting glows around a bitmap image doesn't amplify the blockiness, whereas stretching, distorting, or zooming can.

From the photoshop help file:
"You cannot use the painting tools or filters on layers that contain vector data (such as type layers, shape layers, and vector masks) and generated data (such as fill layers). However, you can rasterize these layers to convert their contents into a flat, raster image."
So basically, text, shapes, etc is vector data, but on the screen, photoshop displays the bitmapped approximation that will be created once the layer is rasterized. For example, if you create an ellipse in photoshop, it will be pixelly if zoomed in, but will display the perfect resolution at 100%, and retain this resolution when rasterized. If you stretch the ellipse, you don't amplify the blockiness because it hasn't been rasterized yet. However, if you rasterize the ellipse and THEN stretch it, you create a pixelly mess.
