Lets say that I created a bassline that never hits at the same time as the kick. Will side-chaining still be useful?

Short tutorial on how to 'duck' the kick with the bassline in Reason 2.5 :
1) Connect a Scream to your Kick. Turn 'Damage Control', 'Cut' and 'Body' off (you don't want to affect the sound). Now adjust the 'Master' output control of the Scream to get the kick's level right.
2) Create a Spider CV Merger/Splitter and connect the
'Auto CV Output' on the back of the Scream device to
'Split A Input' on the back of the Spider. Then connect 'Split A Output 4/Inverse' to the 'Level CV' input of the Bassline's channel in the mixer. Finally adjust the knob under the 'Level CV' to set the
"amount of ducking".
Perhaps not as good as a real sidechain, but it makes basslines a bit tighter with the kick

Dun think so, unless your bass hav some long release time that can make it affect the kick.
Sidechaining for bass is useful mostly for continuous sustaining bass or complex basslines that u dun wants interfering with the kick, but wants it normal whenever the kick goes out, and this is used a lot.
(would post sample of sidechained bass song if i knew some free decent web storage service lol)

How much volume will be decreased when compression is activated.

good thinking, it's simulated and easily controllable, I'm going to give this a try.

you know, with carefull compression settings on a compressor attached to the overall output could make it simulate sidechain compression even more than just the volume ducking.
