Maybe I can help since my upgrade path has been Audiophile 2496, MOTU 828 mkII then MOTU 828 mkII using Benchmark DAC-1 converters using the same speakers (Mackies).

First of all I am loath to mention this for fear of being flamed.

Going from the Audiophile to MOTU mkII there was a difference. Was it night and day, NO, but I did notice a cleaner signal or whatever vague description fits here.

Going from the MOTU mkII converters to the Benchmark DAC-1 was a different story. Literally, literally, it was like someone was taking a thick blanket and and removing it from the front of my speakers.
As an example, an 11 second reverb tail. With the MOTU I would hear about 3 or 4 seconds of it. With the DAC-1, all 11 seconds. I can't emphasize how important conversion is, just can't. The first time I heard my material out of the DAC-1 it made me blush.

The point of this is not to flaunt the fact that I have a thousand dollar DAC, it's to drive home the importance of quality conversion and good room acoustics. I highly recommend picking up the best sound card you can afford. RME is nice, it in NO way compares to the big boys like Benchmark, but it's a good starting point. I also recommend Lynx. Good luck.
