So what if i use these Burned CD's at a party or like a party for my friends in my basement, is that illegal. I have Numark Cd mix-2 and im still learning, but now that i see i think i might stick with vinyl. I dunno someone help me please.

Please if anyone knows please tell me. I dont want to get in trouble or anything.

for a basement party... maybe one of your friends will bust you...
Don't play out at a legit event with illegitamate material, like a club or a promotional event set-up... for a basement party with friends no one will bust you... unless your friends are music-cops.

Anyways on topic... I'll say start with TTs... any self-respected DJ will at least know how to mix with vinyl, doesn't mean you have to start with it, but you should at some point. The feel... whatever maybe if you scratch and or manhandle the record alot this might make a difference to you, but you want vinyl, i know you do, you want those underground tracks and whitelabels... dont u? The fact of the matter is, if you want to keep legit you have to either play out using mostly popular tracks or burned ones from vinyl you own, and you cant burn ones from vinyl without having a TT, so anyway what I'm saying is I started with TTs, but I plan on trying the cdjs later, that way I can buy my vinyl use it on cd and download tracks for home use that I can try in my mix and buy them later on vinyl when I can. Right now, you should just remember that vinyl is still the undergrounds format of choice, so to keep legit and get whitelabels and enjoy crate-digging like alot of DJs find as a real gratifying experience as DJs, go with vinyl first, and use cdjs later... they're excellent tools.
However at the same time, if you're just starting to practise, it's not a bad idea to use some burnt tracks just to practise with, but then once you feel confident, you're going to want to get lots of new tracks that will be available only on vinyl... and download, so you're either going to stay forever in pirate-world or move on to TTs.

It's all commentary above... just TTs now, CDJs later is one of your best options.

therese a whole debate about this in the thread at the top of this forum.

i suggest starting on TT's. Knowing how to spin records should be the basic skill any DJ can do. Almost all good and new releases come strait on to vinyl.
Something i don't think anyone mentioned is, just haveing the experience of going to the record store and sifting through vinyls and finding stuff you like is also key to the development of your style as a DJ.
Later on down the road, i would suggest getting a CD table. They are great for those records you just can't seem to find on vinyl. And also they alow you to do so much more while you spin, like loop tracks add effects and so forth.

I'm a fan of both TT's and CD TT's. Both have their advantages and disadvanteges. and its awsome when you have both at your disposal.

not all downloaded music has to be illegal. Has anyone tried the new service on hooj.com? Download new and often un-pressed mixes of older tracks for 1 pound each. I haven't looked much further than to see what was available, but if the quality is ok I'll definately be using that service a bit, and I think a few other labels will do the same. especially living in oz where it's 3 weeks since I ordered from chemical records and still waiting. And the track I wanted most in that order is available on hooj.
After all, if you are prepared to use cd's you would quite likely download it for free if the labels don't sell it to you, so they aren't going to lose much selling at that sort of price per download. If I want something on vinyl i'll still pay for that.
Can anyone comment on the quality of the downloads form hooj?

In my opinion :
I know DJs that use CDs & I know DJs that use vinyl & of course I know DJs that use both . Most of them said to me that all they care about is the music that they love to play , not the medium itself . They use whatever they fell most comfortable with or whatever their "teacher" was using . Choose whatever YOU feel is your favorite medium and put all your concern into track selection , once you have chosen the right music , nobody in love with the music itself will question the medium you used . I used to think that vinyl was the "cool" thing to use but now I use vinyl , cd & cdr mediums and I get the best of al worlds , because I am able to deliver anything I want in any form I want to the people that are wiling to spend their time listening to my choice of music .
