I have a small amount of experience with this, and I have to agree with one of the above posters - there is no set rule for this, it's entirely dependant on what the crowd is into.

For example, as much as I would love to play long sets of floaty epic vocal trance, the crowd at the afterhours club that I play at tends to prefer the harder "big room" type trance.

Well the thing is, have you ever seen that film city of god (cidade de deus) anyways i was doing a chairty even for em cuz i wanted to raise so money for a station their putting up their. So basicly they got me and a farly big dj hear (dj malborough) to play. Me and the guy fliped a coin to see who would go last and it was gonna be like i play about 2 hours at the beging then hed play a 2 hour set then id close since i won the toss, so anyways i was being stupid and i wanted to try out that new g&d record and thats when it happened. It was a stupid newbie mistake and its just one of those moments where your liek ARgh cant beleive i did that. iv succesfully gone from hip hop to trance befor but it involves going to house first ( i usually do that anyways so it dont matter) anyways my first set kicked ass so it made up for it and i got lucky and half the speakers kicked out so i got to blame it on that.
