It's far better to see an artist in the hip-hop scene dressing like a nutter than being a "straight-up thug." Outkast is actually pretty talented, Andre played everything except the Bass on Hey Ya, that's impressive.

They always are different with every record as well as being critically acclaimed. When you can appeal to both audiences then it helps greatly.

Definitly originators & two very talented people. ATLiens is one of my favirote hip-hop albums, for hip hop the album is extreamly eclectic. Also back then, there was nothing like it.

IMO, outkast are pioneers strictly because they are willing to venture into new frontiers of sound and ideals...Making "hey yah" was a great step forward in bridging the former gap between black and whites in regard to music...Yes rock and roll is for everyone, but when you think of rock and roll, you are more proned to think of white guys and gals twistin and moving on a dance floor...atleast thats what tv and media showed and broadcasted constantly forty years ago...outkast, besides making catchy tunes and melodies, is taking it to the next level and changing the former ideals and preconceived notions of what a music genre or scene should look like...rock and roll is for everyone and outkast is proving it by taking a hybrid form of hip hop and fusing it with guitar riffs and bells jingling to create a modern hip hop/eclectic sound...i am more impressed by this aspect of their music than the outfits they wear or the words that they sing necessarily...the video is an exact representation of what outkast feels society should be, but quite isn't yet...this is why i believe outkast are pioneers in what they are tryin to accomplish...

I like a few outkast songs. My fav song is speedballin. They are very original for rappers and i respect that. I don't care how people dress i guess, it's not like you haven't seen wierder looking people at raves

Now, if most rappers dressed like "Santa Claus", it'd be ok :P

And obliquely speaking, is there something to Flava Flav's clock?

They are going against the grain and expressing themselves.

Like 'em or dislike 'em, you can't mistake Outkast for another act. And it helps to know your music roots when talking about them. *cough* Prince is just one of many names they draw their lineage from *cough*

I applaud Outkast for being themselves and being unique -- a piece of music like "Bombs Over Bagdad" is nothing short of a masterpiece. Hello, drum 'n' bass gospel choir? And they have strong respect for a variety of artists in EDM too. "Hey Ya!" is a catchy, fun song.

For crying out loud (to cop an O'Neillism), they are entertainers. Far worse things to raise the flag about this world, like abandoned pets and starving humans.
