I second that! When it comes to music, it is very personal and for that same reason, we all draw our own conclusions as to its evolution, where it started etc. etc. Me, I go with what and how I feel and it has worked every time. I have been listening to music for some time now and have seen changes and seen trance evolve but my depiction would be different from the next persons. Just get out there and enjoy the stuff you don't need to analyse. Good music is good music!

epic house scene came about in 91 though, through the renaissance nights. sasha playing there first, then diggers joining him later. he's 5 years off track. sorry, just being pedantic. interesting theory bout progressive house being spawned to counter trance though.
i agree, though not at the period where he defines trance, ala ferry/armin. the period i think it happened is here from his own quote

If there wasnt any analysis then these boards would just be promotional tools and nothing else.
I get enjoyment from my music by analysing it.

With his article...yeah some of the things he says are a bit off (IMHO)...
I gotta agree that prog and trance sPLit apart a while back..
listen to Digweed of 8 years ago and Digweed of today...
Same goes for Sasha and pretty much the rest of the OG's.
I dont think prog was created to be an alternative to trance...but it has become the *socalled* uncheesy journey music. Listening to the new generation of trance DJ's...Ive noticed that there are a lot less big cheezy synth lines..and their sets do build...I just have this funny feeling that history is gunna repeat itself.

I dont think there is a problem with music history discussion here either, but i think its something we are all passionate about (everyone on the boards) so an opinion like this persons writeup is naturally going to take some flaming.

Personally I keep my analysation for things in life which can be changed and which have negative influences in my life, whether that be relationships, or my behaviours or my way of thinking, but with music, its never negative. It always picks me up on a Friday morning when i head into work on the train listening to a state of trance, it always brings a tear to my eye whenever i hear Nocturnal Creatures, I always get a chill down my spine whenever i hear an old classic like For An Angel or Blue Fear. WHY ANALYSE THAT??? Music and trance is a thing of beauty, and whilst its good to have the knowledge of knowing its roots, and knowing where it might be headed, at teh end of the day im not going to analyse something that brings me such happiness, at the risk of becoming too much of a 'chin stroker' and taking the pure enjoyment that trance brings me.

Interesting analysis of what the difference between trance and progressive is....

I always thought progressive was a more general term for trance/house that lacked the more melodic/vocal/cheesier elements of both genre. It kinda built up on each part of the song, layering here and there, and never really moving to any peak or highlight in the song. I also though progressive always lasted longer like 7-12min for a song.

Compared this to trance, which has seemed to take a very pop-orientated focus and doesn't seem to last as long ( no more than 5 minutes?) and is more melodic, would make better use of vocals etc.

Listening to trance over the past few years, I think it's starting to deviate away from the (horrible) pop days around 98-early 2000).

Just my thoughts
