Amen to that.

These people really give me the shits. Why does a movie have to have a solid plot to be good. Really how often does real life correspond to the formulaic Hollywood plot, with major episodes defined with a clear beginning middle and end? Almost never.[/rant]

Anyway this film is great. I think its about more than the expat experience. To me it's about alienation in general, Japan is just a microcosm of the entire world. They are just two people trying to find their way in life, reaching a kind of crossroads and finding comfort in each other.

I loved the sense of solitude in the movie - being so remote from every thing that you are used to yet because of this there is a sense of tranquility and calmness.

Great movie, I too have the DVD.

Oh and the Matthew segment is just a total crackup

In fact...the very fact that the plot is as random as reality is why I like the film so much. I wish more people weren't so sucked into to the cheesy box office blow outs...

Re: Re: Lost In Translation

Moving somewhere new and having to adjust isn't a real conflict, and a movie with no conflict is like a whore with no holes.

Maybe it appeals to people who can identify with the characters, but I can't, so it doesn't. Waste of my money and my time, but if you can get enjoyment out of it then good for you.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by conflict, but the characters are not really trying to adjust to Japan. This is what I think people miss about the film. In the long run, its not about Japan at all. Japan serves as the backdrop and a catalyst for the true issues. They are alienated by life, rather than by the country. Bill's character mourns half a life past with its wasted opportunities he wonders about the life he has created for himself with hid decisions; Scarlett's character is overwhelmed by impending decisions, and what kind of life she wants to create for herself.
I think you are right in identifying this as a character-driven rather than plot-driven film. And if by conflict you were referring the old formula for plot-driven films, where there is the creation of a major conflict at the start of the film and a resolution at the end... I think, personally, I'd rather do without it... To take your analogy, to me that would be like soliciting a prostitute and finding holes where they really shouldn't be.

how is moving to somewhere like japan where the culture is completely different in all aspects of your life that you were use to in america or whever you came from not a conflict? what exactly is your definition of conflict? does it always have to be getting chased after by macho badguys with guns? give me a break

and i did enjoy the movie...your attitude seems like that if you're someone who enjoyed it you're a loser with your "good for you" statement
