I make sure it isn't epic or anthem trance. I make sure it's from what in my opinion is a good DJ. It's a plus if the mix has more than 20 tracks, but if I stayed strictly to that rule, i'd only be able to buy Bad Boy Bill mixes. I like him, his style, and his CD's but I also like most other genres as well and not everyone can actually DJ on all of their CD's like he does. Maybe Hawtin and Clarke occasionaly. I was surprised to find Carl Cox has several decent 20+ track mix CD's.
Or in the case of an unkonwn genre to me like DnB i'll go for a name I recognize. I wanted a DnB CD and I got a Dieselboy mix because i'd heard of him before. I think it's a good compilation myself, but then what do I know about DnB...nothing really. I had the choice of the Dieselboy CD I bought, a Dieselboy CD with DnB remixes of Trance tracks, LTJ Bukem's depressing DnB artist album that had like 9 tracks on it, or one of those "DnB master mix compilation 2003" CD's from the music store I was in. I think I made the right choice though.
