SPECS are ridiculous!!! but Id has always been this way, they just cant seem to be able to build a freakin engine that doesnt require a monster rig to run, like everybody buys a new PC every year | Actually the Doom3 specs were over hyped. I can play it on secondary PC, P4 2.8 w/ 9600 fine, and friend plays it on his XP 2500 w/ 8500, niether of which are "monster rigs". Sure it doesnt look as good as on my XP 2500@3200 and GF 6800, but even my specs are overkill. I get 50FPS at 1600x1200 @ HQ w/o any tweaks. If I knew I was going to get that much I wouldnt have spent $275 on the video card, especially since I havent touched the game since the release (needs better maps and a decent mod, yes I love MP).
Another example of id software engine is Quake 3. Ran fine on my lowend Celeron 333@550 w/ Voodoo2 24MB SLI which I originally got for Quake 2. Let's not forget the lovely r_picmip 5
Oh hey, you know Half-life which everyone including thier grandma's old Pentium onboard video system can run, is based on the Quake engine (w/ some Quake2 IIRC).
