nice job guys... those are way better explanations than all the smartass i know who think they know everything.
my dad, who told me this confusing and rather stupid riddle told me there is no solution, but you all clearly showed that the badly worded riddle shows what the solution is.
i had an algebra teacher in 8th grade and when i told it to him, he gave me an answer the next day. it was really complex and i dont remember much but he explained how the "missing" dollar never existed anyway. he was really smart but i dont remember how he explained it.
