I'll agree with the notion that "too much" planning is actually a problem. As mentioned: small things seem almost impossible to overcome. At the same time, you have to have some kind of ROUGH plan for what you want to do. Eg. go to university, aim for X percent, then graduate programs or work in Y amount of time.

At the same time you can't plan it to the point where the future is all you ever look forward to, and the present becomes nothing but a means to an end. Along with that, life is a journey, not a destination.

Have a goal (the future), write it down and find a means to acheive that goal (the present).
Quit dreaming of a perfect past and stop acting so stunned in the present.

Might work for some people but even that's not always good. I thought I knew what I wanted to do since I was 6 years old but when I finally started moving in that direction I suddenly realized it was totally not where I wanted to be. And since I was so set on that plan, it's hard to put things in perspective now.

I guess the point is, plan, but be prepared to improvise when things don't go according to plan. Don't depend too much on a specific path through life.

life must be so boring if you know exactly what you want to do and do that way. I know roughly what i want to be, but i'm far from sure, i don't think that will be a problem though... for example i always had a "dream" to study *somewhere* abroard, now i will go to canada... i didn't plan when i was 10 that "when i'm 18 i want to go to ontario and study one year at high school" but just some rough planning... so that didn't make me dissapointed if i didn't go to that exact place or so... so just some not-so-exact goals are the best imo...

short time planning is also boring, take life as it comes and it will be much funnier...

Yeh, I agree 100%. Planning your life out to the end sounds a little too much like fate and that's something i can't subscribe to. Gotta have some spice in my life.

I've got a couple plans, but the scary thing is that the one idea that my father ever gave as to what I should do with my life is both the most feasible and most likely lucrative of them. Ack, a great man once told me "It doesn't matter what you think, your parents are always right!" It seems he may be right.

Personally I am a planner and it's my nature to plan things ahead, I guess I got some of it from my mother...however you can't plan everything and some things are actually better left unplanned.
And in regards to those guys in school that didn't have a plan...well it's not so easy. It's easy to say you should plan if you're actually KNOW what youre planning for...a lot of people really don't know what they want - therefore they can't actually plan anything. On the other hand some people do know and plan it well, but what if things change, what if the end result is now something different. Some people just don't know when to stop and think, and say...gee that plan isn't good anymore...so they end up old and thinking, wait a minute...I've been chasing the wrong thing in my life. I definitely wouldn't want to be that guy.
