I work in a bank as well, and by the sounds of the amount of your charge, I work for the bank you had the problem with. I worked in the call centres as a customer service rep, and as a Trainer, where I trained the reps, and sales staff.

The fact is, cheque processing is almost completely automated. Because thousands of cheques clear every day, no one person physically looks at each one, it would take too long, and clog the processing system completely.

The item had to be traced because the amount of the item was too much to write off. The bank is not worried about refunding the $5, just that their worried that the doubled cheque could be legit, and end up with a loss.

DONT COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN like others are suggesting. No matter what bank you deal with, the customer service person is not the person responsible for your problem. Rather, they are the ones that can help solve it (by initiating a trace, doing follow up etc.). Piss them off by complaining too loudly, and they wont feel like going the extra mile for you. Rather, be calm with them. Ask them to investigate, and ask if there is anything else they can do.

If the problem isnt solved, dont complain to the call centre. They do not make money off of you. The branch does. See your branch if the problem isnt solved, and see what they can do in addition to your trace.

Good luck.

Edit: Oh yeah... seeing as how it is your rent cheque, if you sent post dated cheques to your landlord, it is possible that they deposited two cheques at once, which explains why you had 2 withdrawals for rent. If one was post dated, and cleared early, this should be very easy for your bank to fix, as they will re-clear the item for the date mentioned. Because the cheque processing is automated, most banks cant stop post dated cheques from clearing early.

impossible, i only wrote out one cheque. this was only for last month's rent as a deposit, my real rent for september is due tomorrow and now i got double charged so i can't pay that.

but i think my landlord will understand, i just hate being a pain like that since i'm just moving in there. it looks really bad if you can't pay your rent the first month.
