I would never tell this to people ripping CDs, but for ripping FM radio broadcast anything more then 128kbps might be an overkill.

very true.

the sound quality of the signal in the first place (unless its DAB, not FM) doesn't warrant 160/192k. but however, if you encode something at 128k either with a crap program or the wrong settings, it is more likely to sound pants and to be a bit mangled

They've come in a variety of original codecs... but I'll be using DOS based LAME 3.96b1

i've tried listening over and over and over again to some samples which include plinky hi hats and some speech, I'm 'hard pressed' to find a difference.....possibly only a mental difference. But not entirely sure...

when you're listening to the final mp3 though, even a minute barely-percievable difference could change it from great listening, to reasonable listening
