standalone amp: a simple amplifier, does nothing but amplify an audio input signal to power speakers.
as opposed to a receiver, with integrated signal switching and tuning capabilities.
the DJM500 and DJM600 are very similar. the 600 has somewhat more effective EQs, a few more cheeseball effects, and a few other minor differences that I just cant recall at the very moment. If I recall correctly, the 600 does have a better cueing setup, I dont think the 500 has the cue pan knob, but it's also been a few years since i've touched a 500.
bottom line: DJM series mixers are expensive for what you get.
If you must buy a pioneer mixer, go for the DJM3000. It has a nicer layout and somewhat cleaner output than a DJM500 or 600. They just feel smoother to mix on, period. It's also smaller and lighter, and the crossfader toggled effects are kinda neat.
Consider a Vestax unit to start with. The 275 is really popular among this group of people, and for good reason.. if you going to spend big money on a mixer, you might as well get a Rane or Allen&Heath!

Well my $.02 is that after reading many posts on the best starting mixer, I have come to the conclusion that the best mixer is a Vestax PCV, I just ordered myself a PCV-175 (3 ch mixer, 3band eqs) and I payed $239 shipped to my door.

I thought that was an amazing price too for brand new in box. Anyway if you are looking to spend around $150, you might want to save that extra 90 and be happier. I havent gotten it yet, but I have only heard good things.
Good luck
