i think too much of distortion can make ur claps sound hardtrancey
i usually work with eq/reverb/compressor...

i dont use claps... snares are far better but anyway if u have a lame soundin clap or percussion u can do some cool stuff with a static flanger (its like a delay with a really low timing beetwin the delays...) it makes stuf sound bigger sometimes... and also eq it, a tip, sometimes making the freq u "dont want" louder makes it sound more complete... like boosting the mids instead of the highs in a hihat...
