Effects = everything.
You can get pretty much ANY sound out of reason if you know how to do it. Some are harders than others of course.

I gotta admit though, I really suck at pads and FX right now, some tutorials would be nice. Anyone?

Take a strings preset, layer it either an octave higher, or an octave lower, Chorus, maybe a filter sweep if you want to give it some tension. Give it a long attack and release. Lather, rinse, repeat if neccesary.

i don't know what you expect but this comes from 3 subtractors and 1 malstorm(voice)

very happy with sounds like these, but thats just me.

Serious all you really need to make good music now is crystal, a free softsynth. I have made music forever and still have a bunch of hardware synths but a nord lead 3 vs. crystal is the same sound to me basically. What about absynth, that softsynth sounds just as good as my yamaha ex5(the one before the motif) if not better. I am listening throught genelec 1031a's and I think my opinion is valid, with my experience level.

Just pull up a few soft synths and learn how to create sounds, start with a clean program or modify another existing one. A basic knowledge of Synthesis is great for Understanding how to program sounds my friend.

Synthesis is very simple, it goes like this

Sound Source-->Amplifer---LFO-->--->Effects--->Filter-->Sound Out
(sample or Has attack
oscillator) delay decay release

All you do is take the sound source, which you basically take a WAVE as is a SINE Wave, what a Oscilator is essentially.

Use the Attack Delay Decay Release settings to make a sound

for a pad the attack is long, and the delay through release are long as well

For a lead sound that is very responsive the attack is almost zero while the delay is somewhere in the middle, while the decay is a similar value and perhaps the release is almost nothing in some instances.

All you have todo is have a basic understand of how sounds are created, thus you can Make ANY sound yourself!!!!

This is what every pro producer does, well some use presets and well all do right. But show me one preset sound on infected mushrooms cd, what about crystal method? Name one pro producer that doesn't program at least 60% of thier sounds. I mean once you get it down, it is so easy and fun; The results are astounding! You can make something as orginal as your music for the world to enjoy.

May I suggest taking a basic synthesis course at college or read a book, webpages. Everything helps, learn as much as you can from all the wierd crap and it really helps with everything else in producing music.
