A couple of years after Groening stopped writing the show, FOX decided to capitalize on its huge success by making it even more succesful! By adding Guest Stars! This rush to include pop culture's best and brightest meant writing vapid roles into plots that appeal to a general audience rather than a specialized fan base. This has lead the general trend of Simpsons away from providing morals, critiquing societal norms, and challenging the limits into a mass produced recycled material show, full of cliche, self-serving, and other quality deplenishing characteristics.
In other words, the writers (subconciously) realized that they dont have to write a good show for millions to tune in each week.
