I'm a trance DJ and producer, not as much of a rock fan (although I play guitar and enjoy some bands), but to be honest I think that as far as technical musicality goes, rock/metal is more evolved. The construction of trance music is pretty basic, usually just a natural minor scale is used, over a 4, 8, or sometimes 16 bar progression, that hardly changes, and no accidentals, suspensions, diminished/augmented chords, added 6ths, 7ths, 9ths or 11ths, etc, are used in 90% of trance, whereas rock music uses a lot of that stuff, and also scales such as pentatonic, blues, and some metal guitarists even use modal ideas in their solos/lines.
To be honest, most of these small discords would sound pretty bad in trance compared to the effects that they give in rock music, which is probably the reason why they're not used, but my point is that rock (I mean a lot of rock genres, not for example punk, which is mostly very simple with more emphasis on the performance than the musical talent) is as advanced as any other genre. That doesn't mean trance is worth any less merit, at the end of the day the whole point of music is making a good song, not the musical concepts involved.
Trance still sounds better though
*feels like such a music nerd posting this*
