Ringu is brilliant. From what i've heard, it was the SOLE movie that changed the way japanese horror films were made. + i think it only got $40,000 to make.
I thought The Ring was pretty good for a crossover. the atmosphere was asbolutely DARK beyond belief and it left no attempts to grasp bigger audiences with special guest cameos or yo mama jokes. The community surrounding it was awesome too. i remember visiting Ring messageboards everyday to hear about interpretations and theories behind The Ring.

Holywood have decided to rape the Asia film industry and are remaking as many Japanese/Korean etc films as they can. Expect crappy versions of the whole Ringu trilogy, Audition, The Grudge, Turn, Dark Water, to name a few

The ring sucked. At least the american version. There was no sense to it whatsoever. WHY can't they just burn the little girl? Some gasoline in the well and goodbye problems. Or an exorcist.

There are dvd boxed sets of the original Ringu films

I'm not sure how the American Ring 2 will come into place plot-wise, but if they follow the Japanese story there's a lot of new stuff to be found out about the boy (Yoshi in Japan, can't remember his name in the Amercian version).

The Ring has got to be one of the most over hyped movies ever. It's not scary, and it's not very entertaining. One thing I will give it is that it's paced well, and does add a good sense of mystery in the first half, but I saw the whole "Brutally abused/murdered person is pissed and haunts people from beyond the grave" thing coming from a mile away.

There you go.

Plot Summary for
Ring 2, The (2005)

Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) and her son Aidan (David Dorfman) have relocated to the quaint mountain town of Asheville, where Rachel has found a new job at the local Asheville Gazette, working alongside reporter David Rourke (Simon Baker). The discovery of a local teenage homicide whilst scanning the electronic Asheville Police archives prompts Rachel to uncover the truth behind it. Before long, Rachel has linked the homicide to the mysterious video tape. Just when Rachel is within reach of uncovering the secret, she discovers that Aidan has been hospitalized - unconcious, perilously cold, and bruised. Rachel suspects this is the act of Samara Morgan, but Dr Emma Temple (Sissy Spacek) suspects otherwise.Having being blamed for child abuse and looking guilty as sin, Rachel returns to Seattle, to dig deeper into the past of the ghostly Samara. Will the secrets she uncovers solve problems, or will they end more lives?

Whatever anyone says, The Ring > Ringu.

And the manga beats all.
