I don't know how familiar you are with Howard, but I wouldn't necessarily consider that a good thing. Berlusconi is a blatantly corrupt media mogul (didn't he try and pass a bill to stop law enforcement pursuing him for a variety of crimes?), whilst Putin recently began dismantling what was left of Russian democracy -- using the Beslan attacks as a cover.

It's like you guys are illiterate, but only on the second half of the first page of this thread.

The AP had it wrong - Iran didn't endorse Bush. They didn't endorse anyone. They think they'll do rather poorly with either candidate. AFP was the only news agency to have the entire commentary.

But fine. Let's be Democrats and put that all into the memory hole of our twisted realities, say "Bush is evil! Bush is a mullah! Bush is a Nazi!" and let's move on with our lives. That's where the threads all go anyhow. It's like you guys all had a bad dose of "E" about 4 years ago that really effed up your sense of rationality.

Well, the majority of your fellow countrymen thought it was a fairly good thing just a couple of weeks ago.

I honestly don't understand what is at all irrational about trying to protect such core liberties as freedom of religion and the right of privacy.

That's what separates the US - a somewhat free country - from a country like Iran.

Do you believe, as Clarence Thomas, and Scalia do, that the government should arrest people for what they do in the privacy of their bedrooms?

Mr. Bush has said that Thomas is his favorite SC justice, and he's talking about a man who is so hostile to church/state separation that he believes each state should be able to establish its own religion.

For example, Alabama could declare itself officially Baptist, and Utah could declare itself officially Mormon if Thomas' view ever became the majority on the US Supreme Court.

I don't see how one cannot see the similarity between someone who shares that view and how the Mullahs run the show in the Mid East.

It's contrary to freedom, and the only difference is the possible religion in question that is legislated onto the populace.

Not really -- the election endeed up being framed on whether the oposition leader was ready to take over (he's still in his early 40s). There frankly wasn't much enthusiasm for either candidate.

That being said, most voters are apathetic & ignorant and generally don't have a clue about politics -- which does explain why so many hopeless party hacks get elected.
