yes and no.

There was one moment where he cued up two tracks, let the tracks run, auto mixing engaged and he stepped off the stage whilst it was all happening. I found that part a bit boring, though interesting, and it was almost as if he was signalling the end of the DJ as we know it. ie. plug in a laptop and let run.

On the flipside, watch James Zabiela in action with a laptop. It allows him to play with his effects pad like crazy, so he's still doing something not just standing around twiddling his thumbs.

It can take dj'g to another level. Software mixing opens up the time normally spent beatmatching, allowing the djs to experiment with other techniques and sounds.

As a punter I still prefer seeing DJs using turntables, but there are quite a few benefits for using laptops that will see many Djs follow in Sasha's footsteps.

Back on topic, only time I really found Sasha's set boring was near the last 30 mins before the encore. That was mainly because I'd had 5 hours sleep and been awake since 6am, and spent all day sitting in a conference room. I felt that he could have thrown in some nice (prog) trance tracks but it didn't happen.

Fucking awesome.

Only tracks I knew were

Mylo - under pressure (remix?) (man did the crowd go off for this)
Felix the house cat - Watching the cars go by (not involver remix)(he started the set by sampling this into the previous DJ's mix, then dropped it at the end)
Spooky - Belong (involver remix)
Age of Love - Age of Love (remix?) The build up only then finished set.

Hope somebody can ID some more tracks cause that set was Packed with massive tunes.

from what Ive gathered the set was a bit too housey. I guess Sasha was briefed before the gig that sos is predominantly a house crowd, and played accordingly!

from what i read [think in inpress?] sasha's been getting pretty sick of prog trance. been wanting to move back to the late 80s early 90s sound? noticed in lotta sets recorded, he's been banging out a bit of house. these seem pretty predominant in his box atm

Electric Tease - Tear It Up (Richard K's Ripped Remix)
A Studio - 'SOS' (Skylark Remix)
Aloud - 'Sex & Sun' (Eric Prydz Remix)
Planet Funk - ‘The Switch’ (King Unique Dirty Dub)
N.E.R.D. - Maybe (Sander Kleinenberg Remix)

edit:

his laptop i should say

Fine by me, but for as long as I can remember hes always been a housey dj, though he likes to mix in a bit of trance from time to time but you can't really categorise him into any category but if you had to, house would be his major.

When we got to the club i was told that one of the CD players wasn't working. I only play CDs!!! Lucky I had my lap top, keyboard and controllers with me.

I was using Live 4. But it wasn't a case of a pre-programmed set, it was a LIVE set. I was performing studio based acts and tricks. At one point I had 6 channels running at the same time!! I was resampling certain tracks to extend them giving me a longer outro to mix with. I was then 'dubbing' that part of the track whilst triggering a sample on top of it all. It's like performing one long remix. The possibilities are endless.

It bugs me when people think that you are cheating when you are using a Lap top to DJ. The exact same thing was said a few years back when I first started to use CDs, now that are accepted they have become the norm (most A list DJ's now use them). Live 4 is the most complicated programme that I have ever used. You have to be a studio head to understand it. I think when people don't understand new technology, their way of dealing with it is by slagging it off. With Live you are not just simply mixing two tracks. You are editing real time. I have an array of VST plug-ins at my disposal. These can all be controlled by the complicated envelope inside the waveform. Tracks can be cut into many parts, some with envelope information, others with none. I can cut the cross fader from track to track to perform outstanding fx using the legato. I can also control what part of the track I want to play and when. This is just the tip of the ice burg of what can be done.
It's a full hands-on job from start to finish. Rather than just putting a track on, then watching it play for 7 minutes, then putting another on for 7 minutes. With Live, if I don't control everything for a couple of minutes, there will be silence!!
It is as the programmes name suggest, a LIVE show!! You'll then hear a set like no other.

doesn't sound boring to me

Quote from Infected Mushrooms web site

"When we play live, I sit with the computer and prepare a mix of our tracks, the best mix there can be, beat to beat, on the track we can layer different stuff. The most important thing about the show is that the mix is perfect, and it is a mix a DJ can't do, we can also take a part from Psycho and put it in the middle of another track etc. That only we can do.

24. So how much can you really change stuff during the show ?

During the show I don't change, there is nothing to change, the order of the music is set and we work with it. On that basic set I add effects, Wavs, explosions and that sort of stuff. Less playing and more effects. You can play live, but not something complicated. With keyboard you just can't stay with the music. Look, take the best Jazz pianist, he plays fast and improvises and it sounds real. But with trance, everything is precise. If you play something fast, and in trance everything is fast, and you slide out of the tune, it sounds terrible. You can't do it on 145-150 BPM, it's impossible."

I guess thats where DJ'ing going
