Yeah iPods are definately for the noobs. My girlfriend just bought one, and although the size is great, the whole putting files on there and organising them is gay. You have to have the iPod software installed on your computer to put files on there as far as I know, which is a pain in the arse.

iPods is to Mp3 players, what Coke is to soft drink.

There are better and cheaper ones out there but due to publicity / advertising everyone goes for the iPod.

there is a plugin for winamp so you can use winamp to upload files http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=138888
havent used it, i dont own an ipod

also remember when you split your files into seperate mp3s they wont be gapless, ie there will be a short pause between tracks

Thanks everyone for your comments,
so let me get this straight....

ipods are well marketed and thus popular amongst heaps of people
and they are easy to use. You need special programs to burn mp3s onto them and the organising of the tracks is really gay. You can put livesets on them and the ipod will list the tracklist with the relevant cue times.

well the reason i wanna get some kind of mp3 player is because of all the livesets that i have on my computer. I wouldn't say i'm a noob when it comes to computers and burning tracks. i just want something that is light, compact, has a fair bit of storage capacity, easy to carry and lets me customize the shit out of it.
I wanna have access to all my best livesets and simply switch between them, between the tracks in them, and go off!

What should i get?

you dont burn songs onto an ipod

none of the players at the moment will read cue files, and if you split up the tracks you are going to have to live with pauses between the tracks

Well that's why i'm askin, aren't I. I've got no idea
how these things work, all i know is that they play mp3s,
which i have an abundance of.

I know about splitting the tracks separately and how
this will have pauses throughout. is there a way of splitting
the tracks, ala Nero, that therefore doesn't have pauses?

no, its a limitation of 1: the mp3 player, and 2: the mp3 standard

Nup - I have one and that is a 'slight' irritation for me. If there was a way around this, trust me I would have found it.. alas no.

(anybody wanna buy an iPod?)

Well i must be a noob but i love my 40gig ipod.

I especially like that i got an itrip attach it to the headphone jack on the top of the ipod and then play ipod on any fm radio. Tune it into a free station and there you go ipod in the car, or anywhere else with an fm radio.

Do these other diet pepsi's of the mp3 player world have that?

the battery life on the gen.4 ipods are an improvement over previous generations (but still doesn't match the performance of some of its competitors).

for your livesets, you essentially have two options.
1. split the liveset into individual files on your PC, then move/copy them to your iPod (as mentioned previously you will have a slight gap in-between tracks).
2. move/copy the whole liveset to your iPod.

someone with an iPod might be able to answer this...does the ipod remember the position within a track you were playing if you power-down whilst in the middle of a track?

Yes

If you have a big set and want to fast forward you dont have to hold the ff button just spin around the click wheel and it moves through the display to the time you want.
