well they'd need to show the figures for the last few years also. Then using the previous years as trends in sales we could test to see if this fluctuation occured purely by chance.

eitherway, Im still buying vinyl.

I, personally, would like to see more CD singles too.

Good call!! It would be nice to get some CD singles alongside vinyl in the record shops. Some nice artwork for the disc would be killer!

I don't, either. I'm not going to put on my sizeably-large "Anti-RIAA" cap right now, but I will mention that plenty of studies have been done by private groups to contradict the RIAA hundreds of times over, and that record sales are actually climbing.

did you know that there are more people buying turntables than electric guitars now? is it a surprise that vinyl sales are up?

i still wouldn't trust those figures. they are probably only US based, and thus do not reflect the trend over the rest of the world in any way.

either way, i am doing my bit to increase vinyl sales, and my wallet aches because of it

I am not sure if they used a revenue number to estimate growth. If so is this number the 'real' % growth number ( you economic majors know what Im talking about ). If it includes price inflation this only shows a flat growth rate given that inflation is was roughly 1- 2% in vinyl records this past year.

Let me explain this to you non-economist out there

If I sell one record in 2003 for $10 I record a sales revenue of $10.

If I sell one record in 2004 for $11 I record a sales revenue of $11.

Have the actual sales gone up? No.
Has the price and as a result the reveneue gone up? Yes

As someone who used to have one of the stores in Houston, there is no way this can be true. One record store closed, and 2 more are about to close. This leaves Houston, the 4th largest city in the nation, with nothing.

Nemesis Music one of the distributors that stores purchase from already had to close their San Francisco shop, and is now downsizing their New York operation because they aren't selling anything.

Stop downloading, and start buying records folks.

Dividends can only be paid out of Retained Profits (ie PROFIT!) by law, so they would obviously have to have a big enough profit in the first place to be able to afford to pay that dividend.

This is quite sad.

Are people just not buying records anymore?

Which is a really, really good thing.

The more the better.
