And I'd add the fact that you'd be welcome not only in France but in Belgium too ( who was the first country to fight against Bush at Nato before giving the front stage to Chirac, who we don't like very much either... ). True we don't like Bush, but we got lot's of information about him and his family, not just Moore's movie but lots of documentaries on cultural channels like Arte. We know he is the grand grand son of a man who worked as a banker for Hitler, the grand son of another bad man, the son of a very evil one and the worst of the family. We know the only plane with Air Force One that was allowed to fly on 9/11/2001 was Ben Laden's family's one, since members of the arch-terrorist family were meeting with people as insignifiant as the highest ranking die hard neo conservator.
We don't understand the US, we can't understand why in hell you sell guns next to the candies in the local super market, we don't understand why you are the last big country not signing the Kyoto protocol on pollution reduction efforts, we don't understand why you let your dumb as ass president lure you in a war against Irak ( we all know Bush just wanted to spank Hussein for his attempted murder against Bush father ), but all this does not make us dangerous for US tourist who can come in our coutries without giving fingerprints at the border and without giving every detail about our private life when we get onboard the plane...

Well the fact is that I saw it with my own eyes near Orlando or Miami some 10 years ago during a month long trip trough Florida...
But I suppose they must be some ok places in the states, not as crazy as florida... Maybe in the Amish sector ? Just joking, after all there is much to say about european countries too, like the Netherlands having been lured by the promises of a pure demagogue, France getting a extrem right leader n°2 at presidential election, Austria getting an extrem right governement, the northern half of my own country voting at 25 to 50% for a racist, extrem right, seccessionist party, ... We all have our defaults

I am not sure that one can mix these political situations and the sale of weapons in the USA. The thing is intrinsically different !
Moreover, the social standards are forcing different in all these countries, in particular because of the history and the sociocultural environment... I recognize readily the drifts of the American system but to say that Europe has such a significant share whores of racists is inconceivable for me !

I was curious to know if, as an American, it would be a good idea to visit France at all right now. I don't mean to be ignorant, but I know that our two countries aren't on the best of terms politically right now, and I'm wondering if as an American I will receive some flak for being a tourist to Paris or the surrounding countryside. Again Im not trying to stereotype but I honestly dont know what kind of reaction I will get as a tourist to France. I speak no French, but I do have a deep appreciation and respect for French history and art...will I be given a cold shoulder the way Americans stereotype French to do? |
Like it has been said before, most of french people don't like Bush but not american people in general. Unfortunately, and like Shito said, i often have a apprehension when i access international rooms, when I tell i am french some american become suspicious without any reason...but i don't think it would be the same in "real" life, so don't worry
But think that french are colder and less relax than you (sorry ); and the other bad point is you don't speak french. You can visit countries like germany, netherlands, denmark...without any problems, the people speak a correct english, but here ... that's a pity i know, but it would be difficult for you to ask something in englsih to a guy in the street. The best example is me , my written english is correct, but it is too difficult to speak fast in english (last time i surprised me was after a party, a friend and me were a bit drunk, and we came back with 2 english guys, my words came fast when i spoke with the 2 guys, surely because i was drunk ...but sorry that's not the question ...but the 2 told me the girls here was too unsociable, think of that (just kiddin))
