I have the same problem as you mate. And, as you, 3 GHz CPU, so this shouldn't be the problem in this case. Neither this problem is due to the memory, 1 GB DDR2. I have made a bit researching in this "pain in the ass"-problem and this is pretty much what i have come up with: the crackeling is due to the latency getting coused by the rather bad card, Audigy

The problem should be fixed very easily by buying a new soundcard (DSP - Digital Signal Proccessor, which means that there are VST instruments that are made for the soundcard and the power they are requiring aren't affecting the CPU). I belive it's a great idea buying a M-Audio Delta 1010LT, a friend has it and he loves it completly. So... i would bought a new soundcard like the Delta 1010LT, as i even will, when I can afford it.

Ahh yeah...Adjust the buffer rate, I've always had this problem until I started messing with the buffer rate.

just to clarify, a DSP card is separate from a soundcard and is basically a card with the processing power equivilant to something like 4 apple mac g4s. it basically handles dedicated DSP effects and sometimes dedicated synths such as the virus powercore. they are EXTREMELY expensive. note DSP will have no effect if you use your host plugins or VST instruments. DSP only helps out with software designed to run on it. these plugins are usually very good anyway but they are expensive.

Try increasing your buffer length, like someone else said. When i installed FL on my laptop (which has a REALLY BAD sound card) i had the same problem and i just set my buffer way up, and no more crackling

What I listen to

I read that certain creative cards are stressed when running at anything other than 48 khz (even at 41.1), but I think that was for the SoundBlaster Live, which i use.... haha.
