What I hate most is that when you tell people that you are a trance DJ, especially nightclub owners, they kinda go 'Oh', and have a Yukky look on their face, and you most certainly don't get a gig.

Whereas if you say that you play funky house, progressive, they like you, and you can play trance and they love it.

Trance seems to be a dirty word for alot of people..

well...i guess that leaves the U.S and the rest of the world.... But i think i like it only underground...i dont like the idea of EDM being thrown around by big company and have to change the way it sounds so it sells to idiots who'll never understand an underground scene at all. Leave this underground to the true musicians and true listeners. Whats happening in Brit is only gonna weed out the weak...the rest is left up to the strong.

Thats the problem though.

When it is only underground in nature the innovation slows down imo.

Yea thats I agree with tobias again about how "trance is a dirty word" even if people ask me what I spin I say trance and their reaction is "oh..." with this look on their face. Well I wouldn't blame them Trance in North America in general is still a minority in music
Though I think the underground scene helps innovation for sure, but I guess a little combination of mainstream wouldn't hurt just not too much. Like IMO (this is maybe obvious) I think trance last 2-3 years has got much more mainstream and its hurting the genre...should stay more underground from where it came from.

There's a reason most EDM-newbies listen to (and like) trance first. It's easy listening. But there comes a time when you have to get over it, I honestly can't see how people can stand listening to the same Above & Beyond-type trance (that isn't even real trance to begin with) for 3 years, and nothing else.

That's the thing. Trance is something that has, at this point, taken on a bad name, when it really shouldn't have. Over the years trance has grown to be more popular and that has fueled more innovation; which means more of the good and bad. Just because there is more bad trance now than there was a couple of years ago doesn't mean the genre is now somehow spoiled or even that it's level of quality has decreased. I think that this recent decline is a product of trance's first step into a more popular area, not the begining of its death or toatal reclusion to the underground. What does worry me though, are the people who have lost sight of what they once loved in trance, and not necessarily because it has dissapeared, but just because there is more bad trance out there now than there was a few years ago. This is what is really harming the scene in my opinion.

The weird thing is that I've met so many people that love Trance music, but seem to hate the name. I have no idea why.

I've even seen times when a club is promoted as house and they play trance, a DJ is listed as house and plays Trance, an inflight audio in a plane is listed as house and funk and plays Trance.

I know exactly what you mean . I think it's because people just associate trance with pop, now more than ever, and don't want to like pop.

Either people when you say Trance are thinking Pop Cheesy crap, or Psy Trance for Ravers, or hard hard Trance.

We should launch a publicity campaign to set the record straight..

Or they think of that god awful supersaw buzz. It's like a million bees drilling into your head.

Or the overly uplifting melodies that don't take more than a few minutes to come up with.
