yer i can really see it now, 7500 people bothered and pissed off cause the dj may not play a wikked new tune cause it maybe being broadcast. as i said you're talking bollox, once again, and ruin a perfectly good thread with it, one day you might surprise us all and talk sense.

djs have it in the back of their mind - yes they do, some even have it in the forefront of their mind, they dont want their latest track in the hands of the 1337 ripp0rz, and will adjust their sets accordingly ... or they will try and balance up playing for the crowd in the venue with playing for the crowd sitting at home, which is pretty shit for the people acutally there.

so, sorry no bollox there.

There may be some validity to this statement, however, this is PVD. He is gonna play the same tracks of his everytime anyway. At least for a six month span or so.

they may not be bothered, but the fact remains, that it will detract from certain djs performances, simply to please a bunch of people listening on a computer.

bullshit,

PvD is very savvy when it comes to broadcast sets - once he gives permission for a set to be broadcast a shitload of tracks from his playlist will suddenly disappear.

The image that everyone has of 'pvd always plays the same' is BECAUSE of this proliferation of broadcasted stuff... once the set is a broadcast, he pulls out the same old tired stuff.

ive even been to nights where a portion of his set is broadcast and then a portion isnt... you can tell the moment the broadcast is off, everything just picks up & is a lot better.

Listen to the radio one sets and Ministry of Sound sessions and count how many times Tell me Why, Pikes, Another Way, etc. come up.

As far as Reflections goes, I am speaking from personal experience seeing him three times in ~6 months and hearing the same tracks, ie. Crush, Nothing But You, Time of Our Lives, Motorola, etc.

Last time he was here it was refreshing, as I didn't have to hear the same shit, but if I had gone to see him a few weeks ago, I probably would have heard some of the same stuff from that set. I understand his motivations in promoting his own tracks, but it still annoys me.

exactly, when he is broadcast its the same old stuff, when its not broadcast its a lot better.

I saw him countless times last year and he NEVER played connected (the motorola track) which was weird. Also Crush i never really heard too often, I dont get the constant moaning about him playing crush all the time - he really doesnt, although if you based your view on broadcast sets then no wonder youd think that way.

point proved - broadcast = a shitter set.

Even live, not broadcast, it got that way over the last year. At least in Denver. And I'm pretty sure I heard him play a few of the same olds @Space for WMC. I still have mad respect for him, but I remember seeing him New Year's 2001-02 and the set was better than the 5-6 live sets I have seen since. BTW- I love Crush, but I don't want to hear him play it anymore. To me, he has gotten a little to consistently epic and vandit. Where are the tracks like Joker Jam - Innocence, WOW - Activity, and Private Taste - First? It's too monotone for me. Others enjoy this kind of set, but it's not my flavor. Just my opinion though. Markus Schulz probably programmed the best trance/progressive set I have heard in a while a month or so back. Otherwise, most of the big trance dj's tend to be fairly boring.

its all about the clubs as well though, the music he plays will be largely following the atmosphere of the club... and if you go and see him on tour, it will be mainly epic trance. Dont get me wrong, this is HIS fault, hes always tried to distance himself from that sound through his words, but not where it counts (in his sets)...

anyway, ive seen him play really long sets to a crowd that isnt interested in the whole 'superstar dj' thing, and its all a bit more honest & half the set was just ?? ??? music - not a fucking clue about ID'ing any of them but it was really good techno & hard breaks mainly... the sort of thing that would have the as0t crowd hiding under their beds.

He should try to be pushing this sound more & changing the shit 'epic trance' image that he has, but i cant see it happening sadly.

What can we do? I just refuse to praise him fully, until he steps it up and shows me something different. I hate Tiesto's mixing, but I feel he plays a larger variety, generally. I won't go to see him either, though. Van Dyk I usually check out, because my friends book him and I get in free. I have been a bit disappointed though, I must say. I'm not saying he sucks though, I'm just saying that I expect more.

PvD plays tracks that tiesto would not have a clue what to do with...

however its hard to really blame people for thinking that way, he really doesnt show off what hes capable of. Which is a shame, plenty of people know what is potential is, in 97 he was THE dj, with everyone from Bernard Sumner to Sasha urging people to check him out...

then 98/99 trance happened, and fucked up his career. Its unfortunate, but he is far from blameless. He's now labelled as an epic trance dj and constantly compared to armin & tiesto, whilst i still look at him beside sasha, timo maas & sander kleinenberg.

I wish I could look at him aside Sasha and Sander, but I can't nowadays. While Sasha and Sander play cutting edge tracks and really program their sets, I don't believe Paul does. I didn't get to see or hear him in 97, but, other than Politics, I haven't heard great programming. Sander and Sasha seem to have the best grasp of that, IMO.
