ive made a few tracks entirely with the z3ta+ demo. which goes to show how versatile it is. + im not even close to scratching the surface of this synth so in capable hands i imagine you can do wonders. however, its a cpu WHORE, the lfo section and effects section as mentioned above are confusing as hell. i found zeta had a characteristically hard kind of sound. bass reproduction was solid and quite clean, treble and mid were cutting. when i made pads out of it they tended to sound a bit cold but clean. whereas vanguard (which is my pad machine, no doubt about it) has this blurry, fuzzy, everywhere at once kind of feel which i think lends itself to some lush pads. also the filter on vanguard is smoother imo so you can do filter sweeps on it and its kind of seamless. whereas the zeta filter has this really obvious filter sweep kind of sound. its hard to describe but i dont like automating zeta's filter. most of my tunes have vanguard doing the pad duty. twiddling with the pro 53 demo from the NI website i find that is also an amazing pad machine but i havent spent enough time with it. not quite as hard as zeta but definitely tighter and more solid than vanguard. although having to restart my host every 10 minutes or so got so annoying i rarely use the demo at all.
