I honestly couldn't agree more. I would love for this topic to drop out of the center of conversation, but see that's just the thing. If this was made illegal, do you honestly think the situation is going to go away? It will just get worse, much worse. It would be great if everybody would just got on with this one, but I don't think it's going anywhere soon.

Agreed this topic is getting tired, though it's not really going to go away. Last time I will note this: marriage is not always a religious act, there is a such thing as civil marriage, which is just the state recognizing the union in legal terms. Atheists can and do get married, despite not believing in any diety. That's why some gay people feel they should be able to be considered married.

That said, it seems most people on both sides of the issue support the idea of civil unions, which in concept is supposed to also grant the legal status of marriage. If it gives equal rights for hospital visits, inheritance, etc. and no constitutional ban is sought against marriage, the argument is essentially about what word should be used to describe a type of relationship. I really just care that all people get equal rights and I understand that not having the term marriage used is seen as not being equal, but I'd be willing to focus on a word after we take care of poverty, healthcare and other pressing issues, just so long as an amendment isn't sought by the administration.
